View Full Version : Changes to IGC-approvals - action dates

Changes to IGC-approval levels of some types of Flight Recorders.
A few days ago I posted a list of IGC-approved Flight Recorders that
were to have their Approval levels reduced due to concerns about
electronic security. Originally, the action date was to be 31 March
but there have been objections to such an early date.
The IGC Bureau has therefore considered the situation and has put back
the action date to 1 October. A message from IGC President Eric Mozer
follows.
Eric took over from Bob Henderson as President after the recent IGC
Plenary because Bob wishes to concentrate on his responsibilities as a
member
of the FAI Executive Board, but will continue as a member of the IGC
Bureau.

I am pleased to report that the ANDS and GFA Committees and the IGC
Bureau have been able to react rapidly to criticism and pilots owning
one of these types of recorder will now have more time to take
appropriate action.

What does the note " Reduced approval to Diamond " mean exactly?
Can A Diamond task be flown with the current Colibri?
Possibily this means Record Flights can't be flown??
What has LXN said about their needed changes?
Many thanks,
Wayne

Wayne,
Your interpretation of the wording is correct.
LXN's only recourse is to redesign their encryption process.
After Oct 1, 2012 my old EW Model D goes into the drawer where I keep other
useless/obsolete electronics.

A slight clarification on the below. A more detailed note for US pilots will be forthcoming on the SSA Website, in Soaring, eNews, etc.
The FAI Badge Hierchy is:
- Silver
- Gold
- Diamond
- 750K, 1000K, 1250K etc. Diplomes
So, an FR approved for "Up to Diamonds" precludes use only for the Diplomes.
As far as records are concerned, the FAI Hierarchy puts International (World) and presumably Continental records at a level above Diplome flights. So, it is correct to say that an FR approved for "Up to Diamonds" would not be usable for International Records. HOWEVER, individual NACs MAY decide to allow them for State/Provincal/Regional (whatever construct applies within that country) and even National records. The SSA B&R Committee will issue our policy with regards to State and US National records use for these FRs sometime in the near future.
Clear as mud?

Wayne & eric,
Thank you for your timely responses, I now understand the FAI Hierarchy on Badges and records, before this I only vaugly understood them.
I'm very relieved as I'm entering on a quest for my Gold and Diamonds this year in a 1-26! I figure in the Libelle it's too easy!
I'm sure I'm speaking for all the rest of the RAS subscribers when I say we can hardly wait for the manufacturers to update their soft ware to the new standards so our existing electronics can be used for the Diplomes and other records.
Looking foreward to a very great year of soaring,
Wayne Walker
